Questions, answered

Is this a dating app or a matrimony site?

Somewhere in between, on purpose. Haanji is for people who want something serious, from a long-term relationship to marriage. There's no swiping, no endless feed and no cold messages.

Why only a few matches a week?

Because scrolling through hundreds of profiles makes everyone feel disposable. A small number of people who actually fit, with the reasons why, gets better results and respects your time.

What does saying haanji do?

It tells someone you're interested. They have 72 hours to say it back. If you both say haanji, a private chat opens. If they don't reply in time, it expires quietly and nobody is told off.

What happens after 7 days?

Before your introduction ends, you each choose whether to keep talking. If you both do, the chat stays open with no timer. If not, it closes kindly and you can still read it.

Why do I have to wait for approval?

A person reads every profile before it can see or be seen, usually within a day. You confirm your phone number and take a selfie doing a pose we choose, and the reviewer checks it matches your photos. It keeps out fake, empty and spam profiles. An ID check is optional, and we never keep the document.

Is it only for Sikhs, or only for Indian Punjabis?

No. Haanji is for Punjabis of every faith and none, from both Punjabs and the diaspora. You choose whether faith matters: only your faith, preferred but open, or not at all. Matching respects both people's answers.

Do you ask about caste?

Only if you want to answer. Community is a private, optional question. Nobody sees your answer. If you and someone you're matched with both added yours, you'll each see 'same community' or 'different community', and you can ask for your own community to show a little higher in your picks. It never changes your match %, and nobody is filtered out.

Can I meet someone local, who grew up where I did?

Yes. Every profile shows where someone was born and raised, like 'Born and raised in Toronto'. You can ask for a match who grew up in the same province or state as you, the same country, or anywhere. Long distance works too: choose where your matches can live separately.

What does the match % mean?

It's how much you line up on what you can both see: intentions and plans, values and personality, interests, lifestyle, faith and distance. You both see the same number. Tap 'See how you match' on a pick to see every part of it, plus your must-haves.

What are chat slots?

You can have five things going at once: open chats plus interest you sent that's still waiting. With a slot free you get picks and people can find you. With all five in use, new picks pause until you end a chat or withdraw an interest.

What happens if I don't reply?

Letting a haanji expire, never writing back in an introduction someone started, or leaving a message unanswered for 14 days counts as a missed reply. 'Not for me' and ending a chat kindly never count. Three in 90 days turns matching off. You can come back once after 14 days.

I'm divorced, widowed or a single parent. Is this for me?

Yes. Every journey is welcome. You choose who sees your life stage, and you can say whether you're open to a partner with children or who was married before.

Can my parents be involved?

Only if you want them to be. Choose 'Just me' for complete privacy, let family suggest matches, or have a parent help prepare your profile. They can never message, accept interest or publish for you.

What's the community code?

It's how members of our partner community join as beta testers. If you were given one, enter it when you sign up, or on your application page while your profile is waiting for review. Beta testers help shape Haanji, so we'd love your honest feedback along the way.

Can I match only with Canadian-born or American-born desis?

Yes. When you build your profile, under where your match should have grown up, choose "Only in countries I choose" and pick Canada, the United States or anywhere else. Tick "Born there too" if you want people born there, not just raised there. You can also leave certain countries out instead, ask for someone local, or not mind at all. It works both ways, so you're only matched with people whose own choices include you.

Can we video call before meeting?

Yes, right in the chat, once you've both agreed. Either of you can ask, and the other can say yes or not yet. Calls go straight between your devices and are never recorded, and you can turn your camera off or end the call any time. Afterwards you each privately answer whether they looked like their photos.

Can I swap Instagram or phone numbers?

You can swap Instagram from the chat menu once you're both ready. Handles stay hidden until you both agree. We'd suggest getting to know each other here first, since chats elsewhere aren't moderated.

Is there an app?

Haanji works in your phone's browser, and you can install it to your home screen like an app. Native iPhone and Android apps may come later.
